While staying fit, beating stress and eating healthy is much easier said than done, we have tried to put together a few simple ways in which you can boost your immunity and resistance to the virus and a number of other diseases during this time.
Having a strong immune system can help you fight off the virus and thus flatten the curve, leaving sufficient medical facilities free for those who really need them. With the frequent lockdowns, changing Government norms, food shortages, and overall panic, staying calm and eating healthy might seem really daunting. Read on to learn a few small ways in which you can improve your wellbeing while dealing with these challenges.
Eat nutritious food
Use what you have. Right now our choice of ingredients is severely limited so we have to make do with what is available. If you can get your hands on fresh greens and local fruit or vegetables, that will play a huge part in keeping you healthy. Don’t worry about the lack of animal protein, eggs, etc, a vegetarian diet can be just as good for you. Try to incorporate Ginger, Garlic, Turmeric, and other spices into your food. These are natural immunity boosters and also help to raise your body’s temperature making it easier for you to avoid coughs, colds and throat infections.
Ensure that everything you eat is HOT. Even though the heat outside might have you craving icy water, ice-cream or other chilled food, please avoid this completely. Use chicken or vegetables to make a nourishing broth and try to consume this at least once a day. Tea made of Ginger is also great when it comes to combating illnesses. A glass of warm milk with Tumeric before bed wouldn’t hurt either.
Keep calm and manage stress
Easier said than done right? We have all been pulled out of our daily routine and tossed into this confusing, ever-changing, scary mess of a situation. The only option we have now is to take each day as it comes and manage the challenges that come our way while keeping a level head. Sleep is a major factor affecting our immunity. Stress and anxiety can make it hard to sleep, causing our immunity to weaken in the long run.
Yoga, meditation, listening to soothing music, warm baths and conversations with your loved ones can help to reduce stress and leave you feeling stronger and less anxious. You can choose from a range of online yoga tutorials and guided meditations. You don’t have to get it right on the first try, just do what makes you feel better.
Try switching off all electronic devices at least 2 hours before you go to bed and try to limit the amount of news or information you process regarding COVID-19. Don’t constantly check death tolls and infections stats. This is not a cricket match!
It can be very tempting to deal with stress by drinking, smoking or binge eating junk. Do your best to avoid this. Alcohol weakens your immune system and smoking directly impacts your respiratory system. Junk food might actually cause you to lose vital minerals and will make you feel sluggish and tired.
You don’t have to pull off a fully loaded 2-hour professional workout in order to stay fit. If walking outside is an option for you then try to get a 30 minute or 1-hour walk in daily. Remember to wear your mask and do not do this if there is a complete lockdown in your area. Bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, and lunges are great. Do these to music or just dance around. No one is judging!
Yoga is also a great way to improve your immunity and stay fit. Check out these free resources by the Kripa Foundation Goa.

Treat this as an opportunity
Remember when you just couldn’t find the time to read that book, workout, cook or meditate? Now you have an abundance of time on your hands. Use it wisely. List down all the things you want to achieve in the coming weeks and start working on it. Put aside some time every day for physical exercise – be it yoga, weight training or dancing. Make a list of all the books you’ve been planning to read and start reading a little bit every day. Browse online for new recipes that fit the ingredients you have stocked up and try a new dish every once in a while.
Slow down and introspect daily. Do you suffer from anxiety or insecurity? Have you always wanted to work on your confidence or kick a bad habit? Get in touch with yourself and try to listen to your body and mind. You will come out of this a lot stronger than you went in.
